Sona couldn't stay frosty at Ram after that. He comes off as such an entitled fratboy goof, a champion hotdogger. Born to wealth and privilege, Ram exemplifies the callow youth. Or maybe I'm projecting. Because I didn't like him much early on. Neither did Sona. Let's backtrack some. Ramaiya Vastavaiya does well in detailing their tragic past, of how their mother years ago died of heartbreak, of how their tiny piece of land was taken from them and of how Raghuveer, from his childhood on, had to then work that land just so their mother's tomb wouldn't get torn down.
Years go by, and prospects have improved for the two orphans. Years of Raghu's hard work have carved out a nice farm life for them. Sona, now a beautiful young woman, is invited by her affluent best friend, Riya, to her splendid home to celebrate Riya's impending nuptials. Guests are arriving from all over the globe for the wedding. There's even a billionaire's wife flying in from Australia with her son Ram.
Those familiar with Bollywood's tendencies won't gasp in surprise at the sheer melodrama that goes down. Ram takes an instant fancy to Sona. She scorns him.
And then there's Ram's arranged marriage to a girl more appropriate to his state of privelege. And Ram's snooty mom who harbors a palpable distaste for Sona because of her poor social status.
The mother's cruel behavior feeds into the story's second arc. Around that time, I started thinking better of Ram. How do you know a spoiled city boy is genuinely in love with a village girl? It's when he abandons his controlling mother and begs the girl's brother for a chance to prove his affections.
Observe an incensed Raghu confronted by a humbled Ram. Raghuveer sneers, "The rich don't value relationships. He'd give one acre of land for Ram to work and cows to tend. If Ram can grow more crops than Raghu by end of the season, then Raghu will take him seriously. But, Ram, there's no tractor, son.
Ramaiya Vastavaiya is a remake of the Telugu film, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana , and, despite the aggravating early moments with Ram, I enjoyed it enough that I'm considering snagging the original movie. Girish Kumar as Ram ends up being a likable guy who is truly devoted to Sona. Some of the movie's highlights for me have to do with the uncomfortable interplay between Ram and Raghu. There's a ton of silly, sophomoric humor, not only Ram's juvenile antics but also an ongoing gag in which a woman who works at Raghu's farm keeps dropping stuff each time someone says "Careful" where she can hear it.
Villains dot the landscape and, so, we're treated again to a trope of Indian cinema in which the hero gets into brawls against crazy odds and comes out victorious. There's no background detail on how the guy perhaps has got a black belt or anything. No, evidently, he came out of the womb kicking ass. I crack up every time Indian cinema goes that route. Shruti Hassan as Sona is lovely and high-spirited. I wish she was able to sustain her spunk throughout the movie. Instead, in the second half, she settles into being this demure girl who roots for her guy to pass her brother's test.
For me, it's Sonu Sood as the stern Raghuveer who anchors the movie. He's the best actor here, and I don't even think it's close. No one could ask for a better, more noble bhai. Anyway, I know I've bagged on this movie a bit.
But that's just me being thorough. Ultimately, I really liked this film, really liked its energy. It's a story of two kinds of love, that between a man and a woman but also that between brother and sister. It's a story of profound sacrifice and a scathing slam on the nastiness of social discrimination. On a more superficial level, I was so glad that the creepy guy with the glasses got what was coming to him. Hopefully, he landed in prison and enrolled into Skulkers Anonymous.
What a creep! Watch this movie. One person found this helpful. I say that because for some reason. Unexpectedly good.
And I'm continually amazed at a movie I was thinking I wouldn't even be able to watch suddenly changed and blossomed into a great one. Swades is a perfect example, one of my favorite movies ever. First 15 min. Now even this movie, Ramaiya Vastavaiya, I started watching once and thought it was stupid after the momentary sad beginning. What an idiot the lead male love character was! Rediculous and totally unlikeable.
But I'd paid for this one rental streaming not remembering that I'd started to watch it once. So stayed with. So, yeah, you loved the male lead well before the end of the movie. You know, like that. So if you're new to Bollywood movies, keep this in mind, please. This one was stupidly slapstick in places, and gave a good laugh in other places; was a great love story and brotherly love story even, with truly beautiful Earth scenery toward the end and great music through-out if you like that kind of music.
Acting of brother was very great and leading lady had your heart, very beautiful also in an innocent way. Overall, liked it very much with one or two brief parts maybe being an exception to that. It cost more than some of the others, but am glad I went for it. Where do I begin!! I fully bought this thinking it was going to be a cute movie and that's it. Boy was I wrong!! I loved it!!!! The story is truly great, all the actors where awesome, especially the male lead Ram!!
The music is catchy and beautiful and the villains were truly horrible, there came a point where I wished I could punch every one of them. The first 5 minutes had me crying because I love the relationship Sona and her brother had! It was really so sweet the way he would take care of her sister and was very protective! After I watched this movie I totally want a horse, even if its a fake horse lol when you watch it you will know what I am talking about lol My brother told me after we watched it that this is his second favorite Indian movie after our all time favorite Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi Love you SRK!!!
Give this beautiful movie a chance and you will be highly entertained!! I really can't stop smiling after I watched this movie!!! Take Maine pyar kiya and pyar kiya to darna kya add Prabhu deva style and you have hit!!
